The New Albany Symphony Orchestra (NASO) is a community orchestra comprised of over 120 community, student, and professional musicians from all over the Columbus metro area who come together to present concerts from the professional classical repertoire in the beautiful Jeanne B. McCoy Community Center for the Arts and the Hinson Amphitheater in the heart of New Albany. This year marks the orchestra’s 15-year anniversary.
NASO was designed by its founders to be a true community orchestra, in which students are mentored by professional musicians, talented community musicians have a stage on which to perform, and professional musicians have an additional outlet for their craft. A strong component of the New Albany Symphony Orchestra’s mission is music education, and our commitment to even the youngest student musician in the orchestra is that he or she will perform on at least one piece per concert. The orchestra offers free master classes, a sensory-friendly series for our friends in the autism and dementia/Alzheimer’s communities, and a student concerto competition, in which talented young people from all over the state compete to win the opportunity to perform a concerto on stage in front of a live audience. Additionally, the orchestra collaborates with many area arts organizations and schools. Ticket prices are kept low – even offering free tickets to our underserved partners – to ensure that the art of classical music remains accessible to the people of New Albany and our surrounding areas.
Sloan and his wife Jennifer have been New Albany residents since 2002 and are the proud parents of three boys. The Spalding family is active in New Albany High School sports, charity walks and runs, community events, the New Albany Symphony and Pelotonia. Sloan was elected mayor in 2015 and 2019 after having been elected twice to City Council. Prior to being elected to council.
Sloan received a degree in political science, with a minor in military science, from the University of Utah. Prior to moving to Ohio, Sloan was commissioned as an Officer in the United States Army and served in the Utah Army National Guard. He earned a Juris Doctor degree from Capital University Law School.
Sloan currently serves as chief of staff for Ohio State Auditor Keith Faber. Prior professional appointments have included section chief for employment law for then Ohio Attorney General Mike DeWine, general counsel and deputy chancellor for the Ohio Board of Regents, chief legal counsel to the Ohio Department of Mental Health and labor relations director for The Ohio State University.
Sloan is committed to maximizing New Albany’s economic development opportunities, maintaining our proud history of strong fiscal management, and providing our citizens with top-notch municipal services.
